In this quick video I talk about how you only need three palette knives when painting a medium and large size painting. You don’t need to buy a bunch of different types of palette knives, especially when you are first starting out. The only three palette knife you need is a small one size, a medium size one and a large size. Let me explain a little about each size.
The Large Palette Knife: Is for painting large areas like your background and other large areas that needs to be painted within your painting. This will save time and energy. Trying to paint a large area with a small or medium size palette knife can become tiresome. I prefer the pointed tip blades when I do use a large sized palette knife. This just helps me get inside those tight areas of my drawing.
The Medium Size Palette Knife: Is what I use to paint most of my paintings. It’s not too bulky and I can paint more freely with it because of its size. Most of my paintings are 11×14, 16×20 and 20×24, so the medium size palette knife is perfect. I also prefer the pointed tip blade when using this size as well.
The Small Palette Knife: I rally use it but when I do, I use it to paint tight small areas of my paintings like when I’m painting small textures or pedals on a flower. I am not able to paint as fast as I do with the small palette knife because it doesn’t cover as much area as the medium or larger size palette knife. Again, I only use a pointed tip blade when using this size as well. I really like the pointed tip blades vs the blunt tip simply because I can paint in small tight areas and make some interesting textures using my scratching technique.
Now you don’t have to get all three right now but if you want to get started and get the most out of your knife I would suggest you purchase the medium size palette knife. I am not going promote any brand in particular but I would suggest that you think about the size because the brand doesn’t matter. Don’t get caught up in the number of the palette knife because each brand is different and they all have a different numbering system.
I would suggest that you just get a palette knife close to what I describe here in this post and in the video.
